Chapter Two

Sunday afternoons were slow at Babette’s. The church crowd had already stopped in after services to buy their baked goods. Those of us who didn’t do religion were kicked back watching movies on Netflix with their boyfriends. Or maybe catching the Giants game with their boyfriend. Or having wet, wild coyote sex with their boyfriend. None of which I was doing because A) I was working B) Brian and I had barely said two words to each other since our fight four days ago C) He was an asshole and D) He was a major asshole.

The phone rang but I was reading over a script and ignored it, my feet on a table.

“Get them ratty shoes off the table,” my boss snapped.

Feet falling to the floor, I kept reading. I’d been taken to the fucking mat for not having the script coverage done when I’d gone back on set. I’d had to let them slide to do schoolwork.

Lou answered the phone and took an order. I had my face buried in some terrible screenplay about two guys who meet on a plane filled with mutant spiders. Yeah. No. Spiders are an instant ‘Do Not Make This Movie Ever’ for me. Seems the two leading men not only survived the mutant spiders – because every airline carries crates of mutated spiders in the cargo hold – they found time to fuck in the bathroom and land the jet safely after exterminating all the spiders.

“Whoever wrote this needs a brain transplant,” I mumbled sleepily, closing the script then jotting down my notes on the front cover. I glanced out the window at 6th Avenue and sighed. Then yawed. Then sighed again. My life was a steaming turd.

“You got a delivery.” Lou tapped my head soundly. Actually, it was more of a slap than a tap. It jarred me from the steady sighing. He handed me a brown bag and a cardboard carryall with four cups of coffee tucked safely into the tray. “And while you’re gone pick up one of them sigh stoppers.”

I gave him a dark look, grabbed the bag and coffee tray, and pushed out into the crisp air. I should have grabbed my jacket, but Salty Lou had made me mad and I’d forgotten. Standing on the corner, freezing my nuts off, I checked the address on the order slip then glanced at Bryant Park. Then I sighed. I couldn’t help it. I loved the park, and the delicate, wonderful way it was so much a part of the story of Brian and me. Now I didn’t even know if there was a Brian and me. We’d moved around each other wordlessly for days. I crossed when the other pedestrians did, not really paying attention to anything aside from the ache in my chest and the skin on my arms rising with goose bumps.

Along the wall on the front of the park mums grew. Brilliantly colored flowers of red, yellow, and rust. The trees overhead were just as vivid and rested against a sky of bright blue.
